Aquatic Exercise

A swimming pool is just about everyone's favorite way to relax, but did you know it's also a great place for fitness.

Aquatic exercise, in many doctors' opinion, is the best place that a person can do their daily workout. Not only do you burn calories faster, but its also easier on the body. The water supports part of your body weight making it lighter on your joints. Pool exercise is also recommended for people with arthritis and fibromyalgia. It can even shorten healing time in people that have had surgery!

Water provides resistance, which strengthens muscles and boosts cardio intensity. Although there are MANY exercises you can do, jogging is the best. Jogging in place will burn 17 calories per minute. The best way is to not go more than waist high. You should have good contact with the floor on both feet. It's also a good idea to wear water shoes for better traction. Once you've built up some strength, try adding some webbed water gloves for extra resistance. To help with balance and leg strengthening, try standing on one leg.

Another great workout is climbing up and down the wall of the pool. This is called, "the spiderman."

If you're a bicycle enthusiast or prefer riding, try the aquabike. There are treadmills, and even a jet that can be installed to swim against in place.

Remember to listen to your body and don't overdue it. Over time you will get stronger and stronger and be able to do more. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids, as you can get just as dehydrated as in the gym.

Best of all, enjoying your workout will ensure that you stick with it.
