How to Repair Thermal Plastic Pool Steps

By Greg - Updated On: 12/12/18

Many times, pool steps become scratched or dirty during shipping or even during the installation process. It is unforeseeable and many times cannot be prevented. Fortunately there is a way to fix many of the small scratches by using common products.

Items you will need: Acetone, DeNatured Alcohol, Rags, Latex Gloves, and Protective Eyewear

  1. Put on your gloves and protective eyewear. The chemicals you are about to use are not good for your skin or eyes and can cause discomfort if they come in direct contact with your skin or eyes. In addition, keep acetone away from vinyl liners as it will damage the liner.
  2. You will need to pour a small amount of denatured alcohol on a rag and rub the scratched area thoroughly. This is to clean the area, prepping it for the acetone and scratch removal. You can also use the denatured alcohol to the clean the steps from any marks or dirt without damaging your steps.
  3. Take a fresh rag and pour a very small amount of acetone on it. Using the rag you just poured acetone on, lightly rub it over the area of the step that has scratches (the section you just cleaned). After rubbing the area for a few seconds, stop, pour a very small amount of acetone on a fresh portion of the rag and continue lightly rubbing the scratched area, changing to a new section of rag every few seconds. Be careful not to rub the area too hard or the acetone will take the texture off the step. After you have removed the scratches with the acetone rag, use a fresh rag to dry the area thoroughly.

KEEP IN  MIND:

  • It is normally a good idea to practice on an inconspicuous area to get the technique down before moving to a highly visible area.
  • Do not allow acetone to come into contact with vinyl liners.
  • This method cannot be used for acrylic or fiberglass steps. Royal Swimming Pools sells both thermal plastic and acrylic steps, if you are unsure what type of step you have, contact us.
