A mineral system is an alternative or supplementary means of sanitizing your pool; an important step in swimming pool maintenance. They use minerals, metals, or elements from the natural environment to produce water quality benefits that would otherwise be produced by synthetic chemical systems.
Now, for a fun fact! Ever hear of the Dead Sea? The Dead Sea has been famously stapled as “The Fountain of Youth” due to the long-time belief that the sea has beneficial healing properties. Upon further research, results have concluded that this holds some truth! The high salt and mineral make-up of the water does indeed provide benefits for our bodies! Hence where the idea originated to bring that same style of therapy to your very own backyard.
So, what exactly makes up a mineral swimming pool system, and how do those components contribute to overall better health?
Mineral systems are typically a combination of sodium chloride, magnesium chloride, potassium chloride, and borates.
In simpler terms, salt can be used to produce chlorine through electrolytes. When salt was first implemented into pool maintenance, you could taste it. The expected salt level back then was closer to 7,000 ppm where as now, only 3,200 ppm is preferred. Fast forward a few years where systems utilizing salt have advanced so much that you do not detect a salty presence at all. As an added bonus, salt is a gentler approach to clean water versus chlorine when it comes to sensitive skin.
This component to the mineral system holds a list of benefit!
Have you ever been told, that if you wake up in the middle of the night with cramping leg muscles (or any cramping muscle for that matter), to immediately eat a banana to relieve the pain? This is because bananas contain a high amount of potassium. Potassium chloride makes a swimmer feel relaxed, eases any sore muscles, and does not irritate dry or sensitive skin. Not only that, it is great for hair and nails! Adding this mineral to your pool will have you feeling like you are off to a spa day or even bathing in a natural spring!
Benefits of borates include:
